I had posted up a final words on rebooting with an attached USB, and that isĪlthough I love my devices as I watch the forum fill with troubled users, it is difficult to recommend this great device without SSH’ing and I really wish WD would come up with a new firmware that fixes ‘at minimum’ the USB connection thrashing and the device slowdown due to indexing. Now if you had plugged in a USB drive just shortly after booting up, I’ve found that the device will thrash again I also had to pull the plug on mine too. There isn’t any other choice when the device doesn’t respond to you other then pulling the plug. This means that the device needed to do a fsck (checkdisk) at the begining of the bootup as you could have corrupted the drive. I did that too when my device was thrashing. Now I take it that when you did your power cycle since the device no longer responds, you must have pulled the plug. The whitish light also inidicates that your device is not in the ready mode.

Your light turn whitish which means that it has gone offline and disconnected. I hate to tell you mchalep but your device did not go to sleep as sleep is indicated by a slow cycling of on/off blue light. I totally agree on an average user not having to SSH into the device as a fix although the SSH fix does show that WD is getting close but has to iron out the last few remaining bugs.

I am an I.T Professional but others are not and these issues will cause non technical people to reconsider taking the drive back despite the availability of interim technical solutions. This problem can also be fixed by coping data from the network onto a newly formatted USB drive, I will use a USB 3 device later on, when I can find one, but I hope the designers can work towards a fix for these issues. I left it overnight and it was still thrashing the disk in the morning with no media streaming available on a media player (it was still offline). The USB hard drive was a USB 2 device admittedly, but this shouldn’t have killed the Media streaming capability of the WDM圜loud device should it?. The WD M圜loud appears to go into frantic disk activity (indexing?) for many many hours. The only way I could get the M圜loud device back to being able to do Media streaming (DLNA), was to remove the external hard drive and restart the M圜loud device. On another note, adding an external hard drive, with “non media” on it appears to cause the WD M圜loud device to go offline and stop media streaming.

Your article mentions about ssh access and how to fix this but it is a concern that users should have to do this. The only way I could get this up and running was to do a power cycle. Usually the drive L.E.D, is blue in colour, but has now changed to whitish yellow. I discovered that the drive seems to have gone into a sleep mode, even though I have ‘sleep mode turned off’. You mention about these problems in your article, which I have also experienced like others. I do have one or two concerns though, which showed up this morning.
